R&D Director

For our Large Video Wall Experience business, Barco is looking for an R&D Director Software. In this position, you will be responsible for co-developing the vision and leading the Software Product Development Teams. You develop and communicate the strategic direction for the software teams. You have the final accountability for the delivery, the performance and the people leadership of the different teams. To maximise the outcome of the Software Product Development investments, you provide the final level of advice and recommendations to the business leader. You work closely with various teams to maximize engagement, make business decisions and create product strategies that ensure Barco's long term sustainability.


Your main accountabilities: 


Thought Leadership:

  • Co-create a vision for SW in Barco and translate this vision to our SW teams
  • Know the SW ecosystem and players in the region to boost capabilities and leverage knowledge/practices/insights
  • Drive the continued change management needed in the sites to make it a world class SW center
  • Identify technology trends and behaviors/competences that may support or impede the success of the business in our agile and digital way of working.
  • Evaluate and identify appropriate new technology platforms to enhance or create the potential market for delivering the company's services.
  • Lead strategic planning to achieve business goals by identifying and prioritizing development initiatives and act as a senior business partner in this matters balancing technical and business constraints. Create/recommend methodologies, standards, best practices that can support the teams & the business
  • Participate as a member of the senior management team in establishing governance processes to ensure that objectives are achieved


People Leadership:

  • Proactively drive team member development and interteam dynamics to increase engagement, team efficiency & effectiveness and to enable long term employability
  • Stimulate an inspiring agile culture of trust and empowerment with a global mindset 
  • Act as a a team and talent builder of several cross functional teams and with the involved businesses
  • As a leader of leaders (leading a large team), participate in the teams and not just with the teams


Result Leadership

  • Lead as a  ‘content manager’ when needed to resolve site and inter-site issues.
  • Plan or implement objectives, or activities of BU/CoE/Practices in coordination with other R&D Leaders to strengthen the vision, to maximize returns on investment and/or to increase productivity.
  • Align with product management as to the market requirements and strategies to be followed.
  • Develop and track the annual operating and team budgets for purchasing, staffing, and operations.

Required education and skills:


  • Master/graduate in Engineering
  • Proven track record in people management of larger software development teams
  • Leader of leaders experience
  • Budget responsibility experience
  • Demonstrated change management experience
  • Excellent communication skills (written, verbal and public speaking)
  • Ability to plan and execute operational and strategic activities
  • Ability to evolve with a rapidly changing environment.
  • Self-directed and reponsive to customers expectations.
  • Possessing a unique blend of business and technical savvy, a big-picture vision, and the drive to make that vision a reality.
