Internship: AI research

Barco designs technology that makes everyday life a little better. Seeing beyond the image, we develop sight, sound, and sharing solutions to help you work together, share insights, and wow audiences. Our focus is on three core markets: Enterprise (from meeting and control rooms to corporate spaces), Healthcare (from the radiology department to the operating room), and Entertainment (from movie theaters to live events and attractions). With a team of over 3,600 employees, located all around the globe, we realized sales of 1,082.6 million euro in 2019.

Function

Barco Healthcare has decided to broaden its activities, away from pure visualization solutions. For that purpose, a dedicated R&D team has been created. This team is performing research on an innovative new device that will be used for skin cancer imaging (https://www.barco.com/en/page/healthcare/demetra). We are confident that this new solution can result into earlier and more accurate diagnosis of skin cancer.

Barco Healthcare is continuously striving to make the workflow of doctors more efficient and to support them in making the correct diagnosis. These are two crucial factors when developing new products and visualization solutions.

A promising research field to take this to the next level is automated medical diagnostic support, which is a hot topic both in academia and in the news. Some examples are detecting hart diseases based on images from the eye[1] , classification of skin cancer[2], lung cancer diagnosis from CT scan images[3], … These pioneer research results project a promising future, but often these studies are only a proof of concept realized on small populations. Translating these into real medical products with proper certifications however is more challenging.

Since it is an important part of Barco’s core offerings, we have extensive knowledge on image processing. The last years Barco has extended this expertise with the latest techniques in machine learning. While currently this expertise is mainly used in internal projects, the new healthcare device for diagnosis of skin cancer offers an interesting opportunity to productise our machine learning capabilities.
