Internship: DICOM for Dermatoscopy

Function

 

In dermatology, an increasing number of digital images are being acquired and stored, such that dermatologists can easily track changes of skin lesions over time. Also, the increased use of image analysis and AI algorithms is a strong driver for acquiring and storing digital images in dermatology. So far, dermatology images were typically captured in a wide range of file formats and stored in personal folders or on shared server locations.  

 

DICOM is a widely used standard in medical imaging. It allows for a standard way of storing, distributing, and visualizing medical images of different types, such as radiology images. Recently, DICOM is being considered for dermatology applications. An extension to the DICOM standard (DICOM sup221) has been proposed to make it useful for dermatology applications. 

 

The goal of this internship is to explore the newly suggested DICOM extension for dermatology and provide suggestions for further improvements. To do so, you will be developing a software library that allows for importing and exporting dermatoscopy images in the proposed DICOM sup221 format. You will closely work with experienced software developers to integrate and test this library with our Demetra solution (https://www.barco.com/en/page/healthcare/demetra). As such, you will not only learn about medical imaging and how images and data is being exchanged, but you will also learn practical skills of how development of a real medical software is done. If the internship goes well, then the expectation is that your results will be shared with the medical and scientific community, for example under the form of a scientific conference or journal publication. 

 

Requirements

 

  • You have applied experience with Pyhton and/or Javascript 

  • You have some knowledges about SQL 

  • It's a plus if you have experience with Amazon Web Service (AWS) 

  • You have an open and enthusiastic attitude 

  • You are creative 

  • You have an analytical and methodical thinking and way of working 

  • You can write and speak English 

  • You're looking for an internship of 3 to 6 months

The Technology and Innovation group of Barco Healthcare specialises in designing, testing and validating new display technologies and imaging system components specifically for life-critical healthcare applications. 

Internships within the Technology and Innovation group consist of 3 to 6 months working fulltime in the lab environment, interacting with the multi-national, multi-disciplinary R&D teams.
