Internship: Exploration on the use of mixed reality for hybrid meeting spaces

Barco designs technology that makes everyday life a little better. Seeing beyond the image, we develop sight, sound, and sharing solutions to help you work together, share insights, and wow audiences. Our focus is on three core markets: Enterprise (from meeting and control rooms to corporate spaces), Healthcare (from the radiology department to the operating room), and Entertainment (from movie theaters to live events and attractions). Our solutions make a visible impact, allowing people to enjoy compelling entertainment experiences; to foster knowledge sharing and smart decision-making in organizations and to help hospitals provide their patients with the best possible healthcare. Headquartered in Kortrijk (Belgium), Barco realized sales of 804 million euro in 2021 and has a global team of 3,000+ employees, whose passion for technology is captured in +500 granted patents.

Hybrid meeting spaces

Meetings spaces have significantly changed in the last decade. The requirement to sit together in the same room in order to have a meaningful conversation has been replaced by hybrid meeting scenarios where local- and remote experiences are combined. These so-called hybrid meeting spaces consist out of local participants that meet each other in a physical meeting space and who are accompanied by remote participants that call in via video conferencing tools.

The user experience for local- and remote users in a hybrid meeting context is still vastly different, however. Remote users typical don’t feel as engaged in the conversation and there is a lack of so-called social presence between local and remote participants. People don’t feel as connected to each other as when they would meet face-to-face. This is the problem we wish to tackle.

Mixed Reality (MR) relates to the merging of virtual- and physical worlds in order to create an environment where both can be experienced in a seamless manner. One can surpass physical constraints through MR by constructing an integrated reality where real- and virtual objects can co-exist and interact with each other.

MR is still in its infancy. Devices such as the Microsoft HoloLens or the NReal Light can however already offer a glimpse at the potential for these technologies.

The goal of this exploration is an evaluation of the premise that mixed reality can be used as an effective tool for reducing the asymmetry between local and remote participants in a hybrid meeting space. Can the sense of social presence and engagement between local and remote participants be effectively increased by using mixed reality technologies?

The approach will consist out of the definition, implementation (PoC) and evaluation of application concepts and will follow the design thinking mindset. A set of metrics will be defined in order to evaluate these concepts in a measurable manner.
