Internship: Generic display color calibration for multi-modal medical imaging

For many years Barco has been contributing to improved healthcare by means of solutions in radiology, mammography, surgery, dermatology, dentistry, pathology etc.  


Innovation in healthcare  

The Barco Labs Healthcare team is constantly looking for new innovative solutions that push forward the state-of-the-art and can improve healthcare models. This group takes care of the entire innovation cycle: ideation and MVP definition, market evaluation and business case creation, R&D and clinical work for creation of proof of concepts and solutions, market and clinical / regulatory validation of the solutions, business model and business plan creation, up to commercial introduction and early pilot sales.  


The task at hand  

Medical imaging has a long history of grayscale content, from x-ray to magnetic resonance. However, color has slowly made its way into medical imaging over the past decade in very various domains, starting from surgery and endoscopy, up to digital pathology, but also to present additional information of classical grayscale content (e.g., PET-CT).  

Because of this variability of use cases, it appears necessary to define color calibrations adapted to each requirement: Some require the best color accuracy compared to the “real scene,” some other would benefit of better perceptual contrast when there is no “real scene,” and that colors are used to represent numerical values (e.g. heatmaps).  

As an intern in the Healthcare innovation team, your work will be to help design new display gamuts, and display transfer functions corresponding to the needs of different medical modalities. This includes the selection and implementation of a relevant and state-of-the-art color space like ICtCp or Jzazbz, and in a second time, the definition of gamut mapping and gamut distribution methods optimizing the display’s colors. You will also define and implement methods to compare the obtained color rendering profiles, both qualitatively and quantitatively.  

The results of this project may not only be beneficial for Barco, but also for the whole medical imaging industry, as the results may be presented for standardization and broad adoption by the different actors in the field over the coming years.  




  • Color science skills:  

    • Knowledge of color spaces and color (difference) metrics  

    • Basic understanding of an imaging pipeline, including look-up tables  

  • Experience with C++ 

  • Knowledge of image processing. 

  • Fluent communication in English  


Furthermore, you should be a student in a technical discipline, eligible to work at our HQ in Kortrijk Belgium.
