Internship: Artificial intelligence applied to skin cancer detection

Background of Barco Healthcare


Barco develops high-precision medical display systems to bring enhanced visualization and diagnosis across the healthcare enterprise, including radiology, mammography, surgery, pathology, clinical review imaging and dentistry. Barco's full line of color and grayscale diagnostic displays, display controllers and softcopy Quality Assurance (QA) tools facilitate confident diagnoses while guaranteeing perfect image quality over time and across displays. Next to this Barco is also an important player in the Digital Operating Room market with the Barco NEXXIS platform, a unique image management solution that builds on the IP network to ensure complete integration of all devices in and beyond the operating room.

Barco Healthcare has decided to broaden its activities, away from pure visualization solutions. For that purpose, a dedicated R&D team has been created. This team is performing research on an innovative new device that will be used for skin cancer imaging (https://www.barco.com/en/page/healthcare/demetra). We are hopeful that this new solution can result into earlier and more accurate diagnosis of skin cancer.

Barco Healthcare is continuously striving to make the workflow of doctors more efficient and to support them in making the correct diagnosis. These are two crucial factors when developing new products and visualization solutions.


Goal & Description of the project


A promising research field to take this to the next level is (semi-)automated medical diagnostics, which is a hot topic both in academia and in the news. Some examples are detecting heart diseases based on images from the eye, classification of skin cancer, lung cancer diagnosis from CT scan images, … These pioneer research results project a promising future, but often these studies are only a proof of concept realized on small populations. Translating these into real medical products with proper certifications however is more challenging.

Since it is an important part of Barco’s core offerings, we have extensive knowledge on image processing. The last years Barco has extended this expertise with the latest techniques in machine learning. While currently this expertise is mainly used in internal projects, the new healthcare device for diagnosis of skin cancer offers an interesting opportunity to productise our machine learning capabilities.

As an intern you will be a fulltime member of the research team that investigates how to leverage Artificial Intelligence to aid the diagnosis by doctors. You will work using an agile approach were you and the team quickly iterate over experiments to validate new ideas and techniques. This internship offers the opportunity to cover the full machine learning pipeline, e.g. ideation, data processing, network building, training, evaluation, visualization, etc. Current topics of interest encompass advanced image augmentation using image fusion, advanced outlier detection or networks robust against outliers, segmentation methods robust against clutter, etc.


Required Skills


  • Knowledge of Python
  • Knowledge of common development tools such as debuggers, GIT, docker, etc
  • Knowledge of Machine learning/ Artificial Intelligence
  • Hands-on experience with Machine Learning Frameworks (TensorFlow or keras).
  • Knowledge of image processing is a plus

About internships at Barco


The Technology and Innovation group of Barco Healthcare specialises in designing, testing and validating new display technologies and imaging system components specifically for life-critical healthcare applications.

Internships within the Technology and Innovation group consist of 3 to 6 months working fulltime in the lab environment, interacting with the multi-national, multi-disciplinary R&D teams.

During your internship you will be guided by our engineers who are world-experts in the field of medical display image quality. You will have the possibility to work together with them to bring the future to today’s medical imaging technology.

You will also have the opportunity to contribute to cutting edge research by applying your technical knowledge, and you will have ample opportunity and support for developing your industrial writing and presentation skills.

We are a lively and international group, including nationalities from Europe and around the world. Our past interns have come from a variety of countries, including students from Belgium, France, Spain, Turkey, Italy, Lithuania and even Indonesia.
