Research Engineer - Artificial Intelligence

As a research engineer - artificial intelligence, you will be working in Barco's Corporate Technology Center, a team of highly skilled professionals exploring new technologies and building first-of-a-kind proof of concepts for our Healthcare, Enterprise and Entertainment divisions


Typical software projects include medical image segmentation and classification, real-time video analytics, anomaly detection and video enhancement for surgical and surveillance applications, AI-assisted workflow automation for live event capturing and smart recording, automated decision support, human-machine interaction and augmented reality. 


We are looking for a candidate with a passion for research and software rapid prototyping to join this team.



Key responsibilities


  • As an outcome-oriented researcher, you seek to in-depth understand end-user problems and think of innovative solutions, implement them and secure stakeholder confirmation. 
  • You research novel algorithms, design and optimize AI pipelines and neural networks from scratch as well as pragmatically implement first-of-a-kind prototypes leveraging state-of-the-art software libraries and software development kits.  
  • You stay up to date with the new developments in Machine Learning and disseminate AI insights and expertise to both technical and non-technical audiences.  
  • As a team player, you collaborate with your peers, (internal) customers and (external) partners to develop and demonstrate innovative solutions to challenging problems.  
  • You participate in a multi-disciplinary team around AI ethics, normalization, regulation and education



We are looking for a new colleague who


  • Has a master or PhD in computer science engineering (or equivalent)  
  • Has a min. of 3 years of experience in machine learning  
  • Has a min. of 5 years of experience in computer vision, algorithm design, proof-of-concept design and implementation  
  • Is proficient in Python, C/C++, machine learning and computer vision frameworks (e.g. TensorFlow, OpenCV)  
  • Having experience with the following is nice to have: familiar with and/or affinity for cloud-based ML frameworks, multi-threading, image processing, GPU programming, augmented reality  
  • Has proven technical, analytical and problem solving skills in several projects and expertise respected by peers  
  • Works thoroughly and can work independently and with great perseverance towards an end result that meets the requirements and constraints, that is evaluated and documented  
  • Is pro-active, takes initiative and shows end-to-end problem ownership  
  • Is a loyal team player with good (English) communication skills
