Technology Director - Advanced Display and Projection

As our Technology Director Advanced Displays & Projection (Barco Labs, research organization),

you define for Barco multiple core technologies by proactively scouting for trends in your domain, guide strategy in the product divisions and beyond and translate into cross-functional prototyping activities that your teams execute in a start-up-like manner: mean and lean.

 

 

  • Define for Barco multiple core technologies by proactively scouting for trends in the field with your team.
  • Translate findings into strategic roadmaps relevant for Barco’s existing business and beyond.
  • Continuously update existing and build new capabilities in your team to stay on top of and ahead of these trends.
  • Become the go-to expert group in 3-4 technology areas within your domain.
  • Break down complex technology matter into easy-to-understand blocks for technical and non-technical target audiences in Barco.
  • Educate the broader organization on technology trends and business implications through the Barco University.
  • Drive division-specific and corporate-wide workshops on strategic topics related to your domain with actionable outcomes that tie together business priorities, market insights and technology trends.
  • Liaise with product management and segment marketing to balance anticipated product requirements, existing and forecasted market trends and technology risk/opportunity to define the innovation space and hone in on defendable proposals including preliminary business case with addressable market and detailed technology application prototype (HW, SW, service).
  • Assemble cross-functional team including technical expertise and business development / product management capability that is able to independently and diligently execute the prototype proposal.
  • Interface with financial experts, R&D leaders in the division and the Chief Technology Officer to continuously maintain and improve an up-to-date assessment of R&D investment portfolios within the divisions and across the broader organization.
  • With the Chief Technology Officer ensure ‘horizon-balance’ (short-term incremental innovation for sustainable growth vs mid and longer-term disruptive innovation with high growth potential for the overall R&D of the organization spanning across product R&D, growth R&D and new initiatives. Identify trends and bring attention to potential deficiencies and red flags within these portfolios.
  • Ensure clear visibility into your teams work and your technology domain by evangelizing across the organization.
  • Proactively advice the Chief Technology Officer, the Core Leadership Team and at times members of the Board of Directors on technology trends, strategic roadmaps and innovation priorities.
  • For prototyping work run an above-average efficient organization that can de-risk faster and stretch budgets further than common in a corporate environment by making the investment right choices and balancing perfection and time to minimum viable product (prototype).
  • For new initiatives pro-actively and early in the process asses the IP landscape taking into account industry competition, academic contributions (public and protected) and Barco’s IP pool to derive an IP strategy around new innovation initiatives including patents and trade-secrets.


Your profile:

  • A master’s degree or phd degree in engineering or physics combined with 10 to 15 years relevant work experience
  • You have a broad and deep technology background in multiple relevant domains
  • You are a conceptual, creative thinker with an innovative mindset, who also has strong implementation experience
  • You are results oriented, have good project management skills
  • You have good persuasion skills
  • You have good presentation skills
  • You have people management experience
