Internship: Ground truth data for fatigue detection in a non-intrusive manner

Barco designs technology that makes everyday life a little better. Seeing beyond the image, we develop sight, sound, and sharing solutions to help you work together, share insights, and wow audiences. Our focus is on three core markets: Enterprise (from meeting and control rooms to corporate spaces), Healthcare (from the radiology department to the operating room), and Entertainment (from movie theaters to live events and attractions). With a team of over 3,600 employees, located all around the globe, we realized sales of 1,082.6 million euro in 2019.

Background of Barco Healthcare

Barco develops high-precision medical display systems to bring enhanced visualization and diagnosis across the healthcare enterprise, including radiology, mammography, surgery, pathology, clinical review imaging and dentistry. Barco's full line of color and grayscale diagnostic displays, display controllers and softcopy Quality Assurance (QA) tools facilitate confident diagnoses while guaranteeing perfect image quality over time and across displays. Next to this Barco is also an important player in the Digital Operating Room market with the Barco NEXXIS platform, a unique image management solution that builds on the IP network to ensure complete integration of all devices in and beyond the operating room.

In order to assist physicians in their diagnostic work, Barco monitors must be able to follow, understand and adapt to the task at hand. One aspect the display must monitor is the fatigue of its user. Many challenges exist regarding monitoring the fatigue of a person and is a commonly researched subject. Commonly, an EEG is used to estimate fatigue. However, a non-intrusive way of monitoring fatigue is required.

Key responsibilities

  • You are responsible for defining a ground truth for fatigue detection from non-intrusive sensors. These sensors could include (but are not limited to) RGB and depth camera, gaze tracking, LIDAR, etc.
  • You will design experiments and measurement campaigns that deliver the required data. An evaluation of the required sensors and their possible added value will be made together with a study of which features can be monitored in a human to estimate fatigue. A preliminary model will be used to validate if the non-intrusive data can provide accurate fatigue information.

  • You need knowledge of Python and data science

  • You need background in medical signal processing and data gathering

  • If you are interested in electronic, sensing technology, AI and optics, it's a plus

  • You have an open and enthusiastic attitude

  • You are creative

  • You have an analytical and methodical thinking and way of working

  • You can write and speak English
