Image Processing Research Engineer

As an image processing research engineer, you will be working in Barco’s Healthcare division within the Advanced Dermatology Solutions growth initiative. A team with highly motivated innovative professionals exploring breakthrough technologies for a new market segment: dermatology.
Typical research projects include artificial intelligence-based risk scoring, content based similar image retrieval and skin cancer classification using data acquired by the Barco Demetra™ device. A second research focus is image processing based on multi-spectral data acquired by the Barco Demetra™ device.



Key responsibilities

We are looking for a candidate with a passion for pragmatic hands-on research to join this team. As an inquisitive researcher, you love to in-depth understand and research novel algorithms as well as pragmatically implement first-of-a-kind prototypes leveraging state-of-the-art software libraries and SDKs. You stay up to date with the new developments in your domain. As a team player, you collaborate and communicate to a broad range of stakeholders to develop and demonstrate innovative solutions to challenging problems. These include your peers, business developers, management, (internal) customers and external (university) partners and researchers. You are also responsible for collaborating on funded projects and research publications.

Your profile


  • Master's degree or PhD in computer science engineering (or equivalent)
  • At least 5 years of experience in image processing, including registration, object detection/segmentation or other components from computer vision, denoising, joint optimizations
  • Proficient in OpenCV and Python
  • Good understanding of image acquisition, including 3A algorithms and the image processing pipeline
  • Technical insight and expertise that is respected by peers
  • Affinity with the development of a medical device for the strongly regulated healthcare market, eager to enable bright outcomes for both the patient and healthcare professionals
  • Outcome-driven, pro-active, take initiative, show end-to-end problem ownership, and collaborate well with others in the team, with stakeholders and external (university) partners



Are considered a plus:


  • Familiar with and/or affinity for machine learning, familiar with OpenGL, Android, C++ and/or REACT, familiar with multi-spectral, experience with scientific publications and/or applying for R&D project funding
