Internship: Data generation framework for gaze trackers

Barco designs technology that makes everyday life a little better. Seeing beyond the image, we develop sight, sound, and sharing solutions to help you work together, share insights, and wow audiences. Our focus is on three core markets: Enterprise (from meeting and control rooms to corporate spaces), Healthcare (from the radiology department to the operating room), and Entertainment (from movie theaters to live events and attractions). With a team of over 3,600 employees, located all around the globe, we realized sales of 1,082.6 million euro in 2019.

Background of Barco Healthcare

Barco develops high-precision medical display systems to bring enhanced visualization and diagnosis across the healthcare enterprise, including radiology, mammography, surgery, pathology, clinical review imaging and dentistry. Barco's full line of color and grayscale diagnostic displays, display controllers and softcopy Quality Assurance (QA) tools facilitate confident diagnoses while guaranteeing perfect image quality over time and across displays. Next to this Barco is also an important player in the Digital Operating Room market with the Barco NEXXIS platform, a unique image management solution that builds on the IP network to ensure complete integration of all devices in and beyond the operating room.

Function

In order to assist physicians in their diagnostic work, Barco monitors must be able to follow, understand and adapt to the task at hand. One aspect the display must monitor is the gaze of its user. This information can be used to gain insights in the user’s behavior and eventually to optimize the workflow. This is achieved by training AI-models on gaze tracking data. A big challenge lies in generating enough data to accurately train these models.

In this project, a physical hardware setup needs to be created to generate large amounts of gaze tracking data. The setup would consist out of a head with a controllable gaze and a gaze tracker with logging capability. A study needs to be made of possible implementations of technologies to create a fake head. It could exist out of a simulation on a screen that is shown to the tracker or it could exist out of a prosthetic head. An in-depth study of the state of the art will dictate the best approach.
