As a Legal Counsel Patent Attorney in Barco's Patent Group you will coordinate and drive Barco’s patenting activities, pro-actively capture innovation trends and related inventions in all Barco’s Innovation and R&D teams, monitor the competitive landscape, develop monetization opportunities and interface with our General Counsel’s office on litigation and prosecution matters. The scope of this job covers Barco globally and has direct reports to support your work.
Key responsibilities:
- Capture innovation and related inventions from all our Innovation and R&D teams
- Prepare and coordinate input for patent prosecution (amending applications, office actions, etc.)
- Draft patent applications and work together with external patent firms on such drafts
- Communicate with external patent firms in Belgium, the US and Canada, Taiwan, and other all over the world.
- Coach inventors in the field of IP to increase awareness
- Valorization of the IP portfolio, by actively exploring licensing and sales opportunities
- Be involved in infringement cases, both defensive and offensive, working together with Barco’s many technical experts
- Be up to date with and follow-up on changes in patenting procedures, rules and regulations in the most important worldwide jurisdictions
- Disseminate the knowledge on patent procedures and domains to Barco’s technical experts.
- Perform daily management and maintenance of the extensive patent portfolio
- Assist to new IP generation focusing on strengthening protection for current products and identifying strategies for new products, for the future direction of the business.
Your profile
- You have at minimum a Master’s degree in engineering or science
- You have min. 3 years experience as a Patent Attorney
- You have 1-2 years experience in a coaching or mentoring role with regard to patents
- You have experience with drafting patents, interacting with patent firms and patent professionals
- You are familiar with an industrial R&D context in a medium to large company environment with global scope
- You have:
- Experience with technology development in the fields of display technology and visualization techniques in entertainment, enterprise and health-care settings. Software knowledge will be an added advantage.
- An ambitious and explorative mindset with a desire to learn new technology domains, i.e. AI, and new challenges about patenting in those areas
- You have good communication skills (oral and written, in English) and are able to communicate with different audiences (technical vs business staff, internal stakeholder’s vs external patent lawyers)
- You are a team player with a can-do attitude
