Background of Barco Healthcare:
Barco develops high-precision medical display systems to bring enhanced visualization and diagnosis across the healthcare enterprise, including radiology, mammography, surgery, pathology, clinical review imaging and dentistry. Barco's full line of color and grayscale diagnostic displays, display controllers and softcopy Quality Assurance (QA) tools facilitate confident diagnoses while guaranteeing perfect image quality over time and across displays. Next to this Barco is also an important player in the Digital OR market with the Barco NEXXIS platform, a unique image management solution that builds on the IP network to ensure complete integration of all devices in and beyond the operating room.

Goal & Description of the project:
The goal of the project is to integrate the results of two research projects into an existing Barco real-time streaming environment called Nexxis.

Context:
Operation rooms in hospitals are very complex environments with a lot of different video sources and displays. In the past all these sources and displays were hard wired to each other, making it very though to change during an operation the image on a certain display. Matrix AV switchers were used to solve the problem, but differences in video standards and the mix of analog and digital feeds made this impractical.
Barco developed an IP based system, called Nexxis, to stream the different video sources real time, with a very low latency, to the different screens. An API is provided to allow integrators to build user interfaces that support easy selection of sources (e.g. cameras, endoscopes...) and destinations (displays, recorders...) of the streams, applied as presets or dynamically during surgical interventions.
Next to that, two research projects were conducted. One in which the concept of a network / cloud display was explored (a physical display becomes a virtual display, similar to a physical computer becoming a virtual machine). The other one in which video streams are fed into the GPU (via a DPDK network stack), processed in a Vulkan context and sent back onto the network (again via DPDK).
Bringing the results of the two research projects together and integrate them in the Nexxis environment is the next step towards proving feasibility of the concept.

As an intern, you will be fully part of the research team and participate to the project meetings. You will contribute to the further development of the framework and turn it into a valuable demonstrator, working on task including

  • Integration of NEXXIS support in the prototype.
  • Further develop the server application that will apply the video processes using Vulkan.
  • Support validation and testing of the designed system.
