Expert Research Engineer

In Barco Labs, skilled experts are exploring new technologies and building first-of-a-kind proof of concepts for our Healthcare, Enterprise and Entertainment divisions or to venture into new markets. We challenge ourselves to stay on top of state-of-the-art technology by building demonstrators and explore new use cases with internal and external stakeholders.

Within the Visual Computing & AI technology domain, we innovate in the context of AI-driven data and content sciences, deep learning, GPU rendering and compute, computer vision, 3D visualization, game engines, XR, HMI, application innovation & rapid prototyping, incl. cloud & browser-native technologies.

We're looking to further strengthen our expertise in the domains of AI for 3D Situational Awareness (radar, lidar, ToF for scene and people capturing & understanding), Generative AI (vision-language models, immersive 2D/3D content, human oversight) and Immersive Visualization (novel viewpoint, photorealistic, high performance, distributed,... rendering).

As a research engineer:

• You are a practical and outcome-oriented researcher, you seek to in-depth understand end-user problems and think of innovative solutions.
• You pragmatically implement first-of-a-kind prototypes combining state-of-the-art HW, software SDKs and cloud APIs with new, innovative steps and algorithms.
• You stay up to date with the new academic and commercial developments and trends in your technology domain.
• You share and interact around these insights with your peers.
• You are a team player, you collaborate with your peers, internal stakeholders and potentially external partners to develop and demonstrate innovative solutions to challenging problems.

We are looking for a Barco Labs colleague:

• A generalist with a master in computer science engineering. PhD (or equivalent by experience) is a definite plus
• Experience in Linux, C++ and Python
• Previous experience 
• Minimum:
• Experience in at least one relevant specialization area of AI or Visual Computing (AI-driven data & content sciences, deep learning, GPU rendering and compute, computer vision, 3D visualization, game engines, XR, HMI, application innovation & rapid prototyping, incl. cloud & browser-native etc.)
• Hands-on experience with designing and implementing (visual) applications, incl. algorithmic pipelines
• Preferred, one or more of:
• Hands-on background in machine learning with 2+ years of experience in training and using deep learning NNs and/or neural radiance fields and/or LLMs or VLMs.
• Experience with generative AI for images or video; AI-driven video enhancement and visualization (e.g. viewpoint interpolation, avatar animation, neural radiance fields)
• Real-time GPU frameworks (Vulkan, CUDA) and game engines (Unreal, Unity, ThreeJS)
• Rapid prototyping: full application stack, AI in the edge and in the cloud
• Has a hands-on innovation and can-do mindset.
• Entrepreneurial research mindset: from ideation with end-users, over iterative prototype design & development to early-stage value proposition validation
• Works thoroughly and can work independently and with great perseverance towards a result that meets the requirements and constraints, that is evaluated and documented.
• Is pro-active, takes initiative and shows end-to-end problem ownership.
• Is a loyal team player with good (English) communication skills and willing to travel on occasion.
