Research Engineer (rapid prototyping of AI-driven 3D and Immersive Visualization Applications)

In Barco Labs, skilled experts are exploring new technologies and building first-of-a-kind proof of concepts for our Healthcare, Enterprise and Entertainment divisions or to venture into new markets. We challenge ourselves to stay on top of state-of-the-art technology and priming future product roadmaps by building proof-of-concepts and explore new use cases, together with internal and external stakeholders.
Within the Visual Computing & AI technology domain, we leverage and research AI and data science, deep learning, GPU rendering and compute, computer vision, 3D visualization, game engines, XR, HMI, application innovation & rapid prototyping, incl. cloud & browser-native technologies.
As a research engineer,
- You are practical and solution-oriented, you seek to in-depth understand end-user problems and think of innovative solutions.
- You pragmatically implement first-of-a-kind prototypes combining state-of-the-art HW, software SDKs and cloud APIs with new, innovative steps and algorithms.
- You stay up to date with academic and commercial developments and trends in your technology domain.
- You share and interact around these insights with your peers.
- You are a team player, you collaborate with your peers, internal stakeholders and potentially external partners to develop and demonstrate innovative solutions to challenging problems.
We are looking for a Barco Labs colleague who is:
- A generalist with a master’s degree in computer science engineering (or similar) and minimally 4 years of hands-on experience.
- Keen on innovating through rapid prototyping new user experiences in the 3D Content and Immersive Visualization space
- Previous experience
- Minimum
- Linux, C++ and Python
- Experience in at least one of these domains:
- computer vision / AI for images or video
- GPU rendering and compute / 3D visualization / game engines / XR,
- rapid prototyping with local SDKs, cloud APIs and web technologies (preferably in the graphics, image or video domain)
- Hands-on experience with iterative designing, implementing and validating applications, incl. their backends (algorithms, video pipelines...)
- Experience in full stack web development (React, node.js, …), Kubernetes and micro-services … is definitely a plus
- Preferred, one or more of:
- Hands-on background in training and using machine learning: CNNs and/or neural radiance fields and/or V/LLMs.
- Generative AI for images or video; AI-driven video enhancement and visualization (e.g. viewpoint interpolation, avatar animation, neural radiance fields)
- Real-time GPU frameworks (Vulkan, CUDA, WebGPU) and game engines (Unreal, Unity, ThreeJS)
- Video streaming toolkits
- Rapid prototyping the full application stack, including hybrid cloud + edge solutions
- UX research & prototyping
- Minimum
- Has a hands-on innovation and can-do mindset.
- Entrepreneurial mindset: from ideation with end-users, over iterative prototyping to early-stage value proposition validation
- Works thoroughly and can work independently and with great perseverance towards a result that meets the requirements and constraints, that is evaluated and documented.
- Is pro-active, takes initiative and shows end-to-end problem ownership.
- Is a loyal team player with good (English) communication skills and willing to travel on occasion.
