Engineer Electronics

Location:

Tokyo, JP

In Barco Labs, skilled experts are exploring new technologies and building first-of-a-kind proof of concepts for our Healthcare, Enterprise and Entertainment divisions or to venture into new markets. We challenge ourselves to stay on top of state-of-the-art technology by building demonstrators and explore new use cases with internal and external stakeholders.

Within the photonic device domain, we are developing innovative optical technologies that enable next-generation visual experiences, optical communications, and sensing. By leveraging spatial optics, waveguide systems, and their fusion, our devices serve as core technologies - the “heart” of advanced systems - forming strong intellectual property and delivering new value to users while contributing to the evolution of social infrastructure. Our proprietary Light Steering technology allows for precise control of light, unlocking new possibilities across immersive imaging, high-density DWDM networks, and energy-efficient optical switching for data centers.

Key Responsibilities:

  • A practical and outcome-oriented researcher who strives to deeply understand theoretical principles and translate them into innovative applications for next-generation devices.
  • By leveraging state-of-the-art EDA tools and employing highly efficient and precise design methodologies, you minimize the number of prototyping iterations required for semiconductor chips.
  • Stay up to date with the new academic and commercial developments and trends in your technology domain.
  • Share and interact around these insights with your peers.
  • Collaborate with your peers, internal stakeholders and potentially external partners to develop and demonstrate innovative photonic devices.
  • Other tasks assigned by the reporting manager.

Qualifications & Experiences:

  • An expert with a bachelor or master in electronic engineering, or an equivalent field. PhD (or equivalent by experience) is a definite plus.
  • Experience in designing semiconductor devices, particularly CMOS circuits.
  • Minimum 5+ years experience in one or more of the following:
    • Design of CMOS analog and digital circuits (pixel circuits, AD/DA converters, PLLs, high-speed interfaces, and various logic circuits).

    • Development of imaging, display, or optical communication devices.

    • Design of device driver circuits (FPGA-based systems using Xilinx, Intel, or Lattice, high-speed signal processing, timing control).

  • Hands-on experience with EDA tools from Cadence, Synopsys, or Mentor

Competencies:

  • CMOS Image Sensors: design of high-sensitivity and high-speed sensors; experience with pixel, ADC, and timing control; integration with optical systems.
  • MEMS Devices: design of mirrors and sensors; experience with electrostatic and magnetic actuation; process development.
  • Liquid Crystal Devices: backplane (either silicon-based or TFT-based) design, LC cell design, driving circuit development, and optical evaluation.
  • Silicon Photonics: experience in designing waveguides, modulators, and photodetectors; familiarity with optical EDA tools.
  • Semiconductor Processes: development and evaluation of SOI, CMOS, and MEMS processes; experience with wafer-level implementation.
  • Has a hands-on innovation and can-do mindset.
  • Entrepreneurial research mindset: from ideation with end-users, through high-precision prototyping to finalizing the design.
  • Works thoroughly and can work independently and with great perseverance towards a result that meets the requirements and constraints.
  • Pro-active, takes initiative and shows end-to-end problem ownership.
  • A loyal team player with good communication skills and willing to travel on occasion.
